As a new Christian this book speaks directly to my spirit. This is my first book from Moody. I will be eagerly searching other titles by this author.
Moody uses plain English and strong scripture to clearly encourage, guide and reinforce God’s word and the Gospel of Jesus. This is a book for everyone. Believers will find a renewing of their zeal, non believers will find hope and Atheists can scoff. I pray for this book to enter the hands, hearts and minds of many people to be revived from this world’s dark places. With chapter headings as Take Away the Stone, Faith Rewarded and She Did What She Could Do. Moody gives emphasis to the actions of an everyday Christian like you and I.
This book spoke to me on so many levels offering valuable aspects and advice on being a dedicated Follower of Christ. The Bible is the word of God and I firmly believe the source of all that is spoken through men from God. Sometimes any dedicated Christian of any level of growth needs confirmations from a Human level as to what that calling is and the processes that occur.
One may think this dedication involves immediate “goodness” and it almost overtakes us against our will. This is not the case though. It is a gradual process between you and God. Every person walks their own path and this book helps you to understand the sometimes difficult processes and the heights it leads to. This books leans toward living a life of example and a voice that brings others to God through the Savior Jesus.
Dwight Moody does an excellent job to explain our call to this great service and quotes scriptures to lead you. The book is written in easy to read updated language not losing any of Mr Moody’s teaching style.

In the first chapter of his book, A Life for Christ, What the Normal Christian Life Should Look Like, Pastor Moody gives us a short description of the biblical event of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. I was touched by a statement Dwight L. Moody made in the first chapter. He says, ” But the Lord wants His children to learn this lesson: They have something to do towards raising the spiritually dead. The disciples not only had to take away the stone, but after Christ raised Lazarus they were told to also loose him and let him go.” I’ve read the story of Jesus raising Lazarus many times in my life and I’ve never thought about the point Pastor Moody brought up. Jesus could have immediately rolled the stone away and called Lazarus forth, but instead, he asked the disciples to move the stone. He wanted them to take an active part in the process. Dwight L. Moody wants us to realize we not only have an active part to play in reaching others for Christ, but we have a responsibility.
Throughout the book, Mr. Moody explains our obligations as followers of Christ. All Christians should desire the lost to be rescued and brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. In order to reach the lost for Christ, believers need to be willing to make every effort using whatever means possible to accomplish this goal. He admonishes us not to get caught up in doing things the way they’ve always been done. He encourages us to reach out in faith and allow God to work through us. According to Dr. Moody, “God must prepare the ground and He must give the increase.”
A Life for Christ is filled with truths a seasoned believer already knows and many of us take for granted such as:
We are to operate out of love.
We are to want to see everyone come to a saving knowledge of Christ.
We should always be willing to share the gospel.
We should esteem ourselves lowly and have a humble spirit.
But in addition to these truths, Mr. Moody wants the normal Christian to understand more fully our role as believers. He says, “If we want to be wise in winning souls and to be vessels for the Master’s use, we must get rid of the accursed spirit of self-seeking.” He intimates our motives must be right and our motives should only stem from a heart filled with love.
This book is a must read for all Christians. Dr. Moody is a well known and respected man of God. He is wise and has much to teach those of us who are fearful of partaking in the soul winning aspect of Christianity. I recommend this book highly and know it will bless those who read it.

Dwight L. Moody is one of those prolific writers whose insight is valuable across multiple generations. A Life For Christ (newly updated) does not disappoint.
It’s not a large book and is an easy read – yet full of deeper truths which deserve careful consideration. You can read through it quickly, but be sure to slow down and really soak it up!
If you are striving to understand and learn more about what is really involved in living your life full-out for the Lord, you will gain a lot of knowledge from his writings.
I look forward to reading more of his classic books and appreciate the updated versions from Aneko Press.

Dwight L Moody is someone many people have looked up to over the years. He is truly and inspiration as are the words penned in this book. This book is a short nine chapters, but chalk full of information and encouragement for Christians who desire to really serve the Lord.
Dwight fill us in on what the normal Christian life should look like with chapters on Love, Courage, Faith, and Enthusiasm. One of the chapters that really spoke to me was the chapter on Love. Dwight shares how love is the key to everything we do as Christians and the impact it has on those around us. He uses examples and stories to establish his point, as well as Scripture and Bible stories.
I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a closer walk with Christ and has a burden for reaching souls. Dwight Moody was an incredible soul winner and his tips can still be used today. This book should be read slowly and meditated on. I am excited to have this book as a part of my library collection.

“A Life For Christ” is Dwight L. Moody’s guidebook for what a normal Christian life should look like. Church today sometimes leaves out a key element in our Christian walk. Church buildings are meticulously kept and sermons are well-prepared, but Christians are leaving on Sunday mornings not being encouraged to live a life that is impacting the world.
With the onset of the Internet and social media, people don’t have to attend church to see a sermon. Many able-bodied Christians are choosing to “attend” church online (and sometimes even encouraged to do so) rather than being an active member of a local congregation. Moody discusses what we are missing when we choose to walk our Christian life without other believers and how to change and become the people God wants us to be. By living a life for Christ instead of for ourselves or others, we can demonstrate God’s love to the world around us.
“A Life For Christ” is encouraging and convicting. Moody’s examples are relevant, even today, and help us see what we are missing in our Christian walk and how to become better at life. Rather than condemning, Moody encourages readers to seek after and follow Christ and helps us encourage others as well.

I have read several books about D.L. Moody but I had never actually read anything that he and preached or written. I really enjoyed, A Life for Christ, it is a really simple book about what a Christian living a Jesus filled life should look like. It’s not preachy or condescending it just shows you how you can make a difference for the kingdom of God, how you can impact lives around you.
When you read his words you see a true love for God and for the lost who need salvation. He shows you how a simple kindness done with the love of Christ as your motivation can change the eternal destiny of not just the person you touched but by those they will go on to meet. All you need to do is what you can do; you don’t need to fill stadiums to make a difference.
I also found it interesting that many during this time period didn’t feel the need to make sure their children were saved, that they would somehow choose to come to Christ when they were grown. What a terrible waste. When you read this book you come away feeling as though even the simplest things you do, when done with the backing of love, can make all the difference in someone’s life.

Dwight L. Moody’s style of writing in A Life For Christ is most reminiscent of modern preaching and is often used in today’s post modern world. By this I mean he uses many personal experiences and emotional stories familiar to his audience in which he relates many Scriptural passages. I have often heard similar stories by preachers in Baptist churches in my lifetime. I didn’t realize a lot of them came from this 19th century man of God.
Moody’s biggest theme throughout his book is lifestyle evangelism: living a life so dedicated to the work of Christ that others will be so constrained by our love for God that they become converted. He emphasizes much the telling of the Gospel to our neighbors, which includes the whole human race no matter how desolate a soul they may be. His best chapters deal with Scripture on the woman, Mary, and her alabaster box as well as the Good Samaritan.
The only criticism I feel should be mentioned is some of the language in use like “inquiry room”. I am not sure what this is as churches don’t have a labeled room like this anymore. I assumed it was a visitation alter or pastor’s office.
Moody uses the word of God in such a basic, foundational way that you find it easy to draw personal conclusions. Plain and easy to read without lofty linguistics meaning to impress. The Gospel is simple and Moody does not surpass it with his personal ideas or methods. After perching and reading this book I passed it onto a fellow officer at the prison I work at.
