Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. – John 3:3
About the Author
Dwight L. Moody, determined to make a fortune, arrived in Chicago and started selling shoes. But Christ found him and his energies were redirected into full-time ministry. And what a ministry it was. Wondrous Love is a collection of sermons preached by D.L. Moody. Each sermon presents the gospel message from a different perspective.
Never having read Moody before, I found his presentation down-to-earth, the gospel message shared in a way anyone could understand and certainly persuasive. I would have loved to have heard him in person! There’s no flowery language, words of great length or perceived attempt to impress – just an everyday man lovingly speaking the message most needed by everyday man: A loving Father wants His children to come to Him through faith in His Son’s redemptive sacrifice. I can see why so many responded to the message.
I thought his message on the ‘eight wills’ was one of his more unique messages. I’ve never heard anyone speak of these before. Here they are: (1) I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28-29; (2) I will not cast you away, John 6:37; (3) I will make you clean, Luke 5:13; (4) I will confess you to my Father, Matthew 10:32; (5) The “I will” of service, Matthew 4:19 & John 12:32; (6) I will not abandon you, John 14:18; (7) I will raise him up, John 6:40; (8)I will bring you into My glory, John 17:24. He concludes these eight “I wills” of Christ with a plea to the lost to say “I will arise and go to my father,” referencing the story of the prodigal son in regards to coming to our Heavenly Father.
My favorite sermon was Moody’s rendition of the story of one of the thieves on the cross beside Jesus. He believed that it was Christ’s love as He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know now what they do,” that broke the thief’s heart and caused him to repent and place his trust in Jesus. May the love of Christ effect those who read this book the same way. Amen.
