What a fantastic little book. I quickly read through the first time and then immediately re-read it. Taking time to study it and work through tue exercises. The authors examine 10 intertwining dimensions of character that they take from Paul’s letters to Timothy ( 1 Timothy 3:2-13) and Titus (Titus 1:5-10). Paul calls Christian leaders to such things as Be Blameless, Be Servants to Their Family, and Be Hospitable.
Besides being full of sound biblical advice the authors also draw on the advice of other well-known Christian leadership mentors such as John Maxwell and Ken Sande. One of the more helpful chapters to me was chapter 3 – Be a Steward to Your Family.
If you take your time and read through and study this book, if you take the time to do the exercises, especially in Chapters 9 and 10 and also the The Character Trait Assessment at the end of the book I believe this book can change your life.
I can’t recommend it enough.
This book was written for use by Christian leaders presenting to them spiritual qualifications to be a godly leader. I believe it accomplishes its purposes if read with the understanding that the ability to model the character qualities discussed comes only by drawing on the power of God’s grace purchased on our behalf by the Lord Jesus Christ. Remembering that Jesus bought all our sin, weakness, natural strengths and talents at the cost of His own life so that we may exchange that natural life for the power of His divine life lived through us. This means that to take back any of our natural life would be stealing from Jesus since He bought it and at such a high price. Who would want to do that?
This book highlights those character qualities that the Apostle Paul exhorts leaders to display. It encourages the reader to embrace each quality while living their daily lives. These include blamelessness, humility, serving others, trustworthiness, discipline, uprightness, gentleness, hospitality, to be lovers of good and holiness.
The book concludes with a character trait assessment test to be completed by the reader and preferably fellow believers who know them well.
I believe there is a lot of value in reading this book and assessing one’s own character whether it be as a leader as intended or as someone who genuinely wants to live for Christ. As mentioned before, doing this through drawing on the power of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.
