About the Author

David Riddle Breed was a significant figure in American religious history, known for his work as a Presbyterian clergyman and educator. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 10, 1848, he graduated from Hamilton College in 1867 and Auburn Theological Seminary in 1870. Breed held pastorates in St. Paul and Chicago before moving to the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh in 1894. He later became a Professor of Practical Theology at Western Theological Seminary in Allegheny, Pa., and worked closely with the Board of Missions for Freedmen. Among his notable publications is The History and Use of Hymns and Hymn Tunes, highlighting his deep engagement with hymnody. Breed passed away on December 11, 1931, and was buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
