The will of a man is the power by which he determines his actions and decides what he will do or not do. In it, his hidden, inward being is revealed, showing what his desires and dispositions truly are – whether foolish or wise, good or evil. The will is the revelation of character and life. What a man truly wills, he will surely seek to carry out, either by himself or through others.
In the will of God, we have the perfect expression of His divine perfection. Because He is the fountain of all beauty and blessedness, His will is inconceivably beautiful and good. In it, His divine wisdom and goodness make themselves known. Through it alone the creature can know his God; in accepting and doing that will, he finds the only sure way to fellowship and union with God.
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. These chapters invite you to meditate on this petition, trusting that the Father, by His Holy Spirit, may show you the beauty of His will and the truly heavenly blessedness of living in it. Let the glory of God accomplishing His will in us and through us be met by nothing less than a will wholly yielded to do His will on earth as it is done in heaven. Study how God’s will is done in heaven and yield yourself to do it here, even as it is done there.

1 review for Thy Will Be Done
Since I’ve never read a book by Andrew Murray that I didn’t love, the expectations for this book were sky high. It didn’t disappoint. In fact, I hope to re-read it soon.
One of my favorite things about Andrew Murray’s writing is that even though he lived in the 1800s, he explains his subject matter in a relatable, understandable way. Every thought is backed up by Scripture. Almost all of his books are written with short chapters, usually 31 of them, so they can be used as a devotional book. Each chapter is like a small bite, that can be chewed and digested without overwhelming. The nutrient value is high in spiritual richness.
Consider these flavorful samples: “We often fail to take hold of a promise we long to enjoy because we treat it as something isolated and do not connect it with the great whole of God’s will for us. Let every believer seek earnestly to understand what God’s will in His promises is. It is His decision to do a certain thing – His pledge to work in or for us as we trust Him.”
In the chapter entitled, “Doing God’s Will, Our Union with Jesus”: “Many Christians never learn the difference between the law of God and the will of God. The law is given by a ruler and, when set down in a statute book, may be obeyed or broken with little sense of personal relationship to the lawgiver. For this reason, the law has no power to produce obedience. But Christ speaks of the will as the will of a living relationship, in which the Father’s voice and presence are known and the will is never separate from Him whose will it is.”
Murray portrays God as One who longs for relationship with His children, wanting them to see His will not as something impossible to know or accomplish, but as something given to know and bless us, even when it is difficult. God’s love is seen in this book as flowing through His will for each of us. Very beautiful indeed!
